History of the Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition

Since the early 1990's,  partner organizations with the Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition have worked on strategies and policies to reduce the economic and physical harm caused by tobacco use in the state of Kansas.  This efforts have involved developing policy positions regarding tobacco use, advocating for policy changes related to reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, increasing the price of tobacco products, empowering youth to resist tobacco use , collaborating on increasing tobaco retail compliance to youth access laws, helping to promote tobacco control media campaigns, providing technical assistance to communities on prevention and cessation efforts, organizing trainings and information conferences, and developing long-term strategic plans for tobacco control.  

Tobacco control accomplishments

Major tobacco control accomplishments in Kansas include many local success stories across the state.

  • Model youth access law
  • The first major smokefree restaurant ordinance in Salina in 2001
  • 55-cent cigarette tax increase in 2002
  • Comprehensive smokefree workplace policy in Lawrence in 2004
  • Model tobacco-use prevention and cessation program in Saline County
  • Development of media campaigns promoting youth empowerment as well as clean indoor air
  • 39 local clean indoor air policies adopted between 2002 and 2009
  • After three years of effort, the adoption of a statewide clean indoor air law in 2010
  • Development of four strategic plans that have led to tobacco control successes
  • Establishment of a biennial Tobacco Control Conferences in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010
  • Maintenance of continued funding of $1 million dollars for tobacco prevention and cessation programs
  • Establishment of youth empowerment groups across Kansas through a statewide board and mini grant program
